Neko Case revealed that the Oscar Award-winning film “Thelma and Louise” will head to the stage “in the next year or two,” according to a recent interview with The New York Times.

In the article, the singer-songwriter says she is collaborating on the songs for a musical adaptation of the film, hoping that it is bound for Broadway.

“I was the target audience for that movie,” Case said of the 1991 hit. “I was exactly the right age. I saw it trillions of times.”

The musical’s book belongs to Callie Khouri, who also wrote the film’s screenplay. According to the NYT, she is reported to be a fan of Case’s music and selected her personally to work on the musical.

“Her music has such scope, sonically and lyrically,” Khouri said in a phone interview with the publication. “She’s such a righteous, true-north artist and person.”

This is the latest news regarding that film’s musical adaptation; it was previously featured by various sources in 2021 during its early stages.

“We’ve got a book and we’ve got music but because of the pandemic, we all haven’t been together in a very, very long time,” Khouri told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021. “So, it’s still in its nascent stages, but it’s very promising. I don’t want to say too much about it.”

the Ridley Scott-directed “Thelma and Louise” premiered in 1991, featuring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis as two best friends whose road trip takes a disastrous turn. The film was a major box office success, earned six Oscar nominations with Khouri winning Best Original Screenplay. At the time, it also introduced the rising star Brad Pitt.

Case’s debut album The Virginian with her backing band Her Boyfriends dates back to 1997, and it was followed by Furnace Room Lullaby in 2000. She released seven solo records, and her 2013 album, titled The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You, earned the singer a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. Other than her solo works, Case is a founding member of The New Pornographers band. She recently released her memoir, The Harder I Fight the More I Love You.
