Jane’s Addiction has been forced to cancel its six-date Australian tour due to an illness suffered by member Stephen Perkins.

The drummer was admitted to the Infectious Disease Ward at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles for treatment of an infection in his elbow, following their European tour. Perkins is undergoing antibiotic treatment and a full recovery is anticipated over the next few weeks.

The newly reformed band is still expected to participate in Lollapalooza in Chicago, IL, on August 7. Jane’s frontman Perry Farrell created the festival in 1991, when the band headlined the event as part of their farewell tour. Lollapalooza continued touring annually through 1997, returning only briefly in 2003, before becoming the destination festival it is today in 2005.

Leading up to Perkins’ illness, Jane’s Addiction had been on a world tour, its first in 17 years. The band completed the U.S. portion of the tour with Nine Inch Nails in late spring and early summer.

“I know how excited we were to come play in Australia and how long the fans there have waited for this,” Farrell commented on the band’s Web site. “I want everyone Down Under to know that we will come back as soon as we can.”

The reunited alternative rockers were also due to headline last weekend’s July 25-26 Splendour In the Grass festival in Byron Bay, in northern New South Wales. Their festival slot was instead filled by local rock trio the Living End.
