Several onsales for Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefers’ “The Year of Still Here” Tour have not only pleased parrotheads nationwide, but have also shot the performer into the third place position on the top events list for the week of March 3 – March 9, 2008. Wicked and the New York Yankees have not experienced any “changes in latitude,” however, as they remain the first and second top events for this week. Another “smiling face” to grace the top of the charts this week is James Taylor, who jumped from twelfth place last week to fourth place this week in the Top Overall Events.
The world of sports did not experience any major upset over the past week, as the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Lakers maintain the top three positions on the Top Sports Events List. However, a popular new event was “served” up in the sports rankings this week. The NetJets Showdown between Pete Sampras and Roger Federer (or the champion of tennis-past versus the champion of tennis-present) surpassed the Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, and WWE to clinch the fourth place position. The match takes place at Madison Square Garden on March 10.
Not much upstaging went on this week in theatre news either, as Wicked and Jersey Boys maintain their long runs in first and second place both on the Top Theatre Events and Top Top Broadway Events lists. Disney’s musical contributions are also enjoying the spotlight, as the Lion King earns third place on the top theatre events list and fourth on the top Broadway events list, and the Little Mermaid catches fourth place in theatre and third in Broadway. Reappearing on both lists this week is Mamma Mia!, which earned enough “money, money, money” to snag eighth place on the top theater and seventh place on the top Broadway chart. Another newcomer to pounce into the theatrical scene this week is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, which is proving to be one hot ticket as it cracks onto the Broadway chart in ninth place.
Also maintaining the status quo this week are the Las Vegas events, where Bette Midler, Cher, Elton John, Cirque du Soleil: “O”, and Cirque du Soleil: The Beatles: LOVE remain in the first five positions. The second half of the Top Las Vegas Events chart features several acts that were absent last week: Mamma Mia!, Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular, Stomp Out Loud, and Cirque du Soleil: Mystere Tickets cashed out in seventh through tenth place. Who knows what’s in the stars for next week’s Las Vegas events? One thing’s for certain: Las Vegas is full of top quality entertainment, and you can bet on that.
The Top Concert Events saw the most turmoil of any list, as not a single performer maintained their position from last week. Jimmy Buffett arrived on the chart in first place, and James Taylor’s “one man parade” marched up from ninth to second place. Both acts displaced Kenny Chesney, who “go back” to third from first place this week. Honorable mentions include Bon Jovi, who climbed from sixth to fourth place, and Eric Clapton, who debuted at fifth place this week.
