Country music singer Lorrie Morgan is headed to the Great White Way in 2010 to star in the Broadway musical “Pure Country,” which is based on a 1992 movie starring George Strait. She will play Lula, who was portrayed by Lesley Ann Warren in the film. Country music vocalist Joe Nichols has already been cast in the role of Rusty.
The production will contain an original multi-genre score, including new and classic country, Broadway and contemporary music with music composed by Steve Dorff, who has penned nine No. 1 songs, and lyrics by John Bettis. Dorff also wrote some of the music for the film soundtrack that topped the country music charts.
“The ‘Pure Country’ family is absolutely overjoyed to welcome Lorrie Morgan,” producer Randall L. Wreghitt said in a statement. “To have a country music star of her caliber sets the artistic bar high and brings additional authenticity to the show.”
Wreghitt continued, “The combination of Joe Nichols and Lorrie Morgan promises to be a dream collaboration for country music fans and for everyone who sees the show. We couldn’t be more excited and proud to bring ‘Pure Country’ and Lorrie Morgan to Broadway.”
Morgan began her recording career in 1979 and appeared on the Grand Ole Opry at age 13. She was the first female country singer to have three consecutive albums certified platinum. Each sold more than one million copies.
“I never thought my life’s path would take me to Broadway, but when I heard they were creating a musical based on one of country music’s best-loved films, I knew I had to be part of it,” Morgan said of her involvement with the project. “I’m very excited about making my Broadway debut and becoming part of the theater community. I’m also looking forward to working with Joe Nichols. He’s an amazing talent, and I hope country fans come on up to the big city to see us!”
