State legislators in Louisiana have been scarfing up tickets to the upcoming BCS national championship game at the Superdome, under a government provision.

Nearly 300 tickets have been purchased through Louisiana State University, and hundreds more have been requested through the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Each sitting lawmaker had access to tickets from both outlets. Many of them leave office a week after the Jan. 7 game between LSU and Ohio State in New Orleans.

House Speaker Joe Salter, D-Florien, acknowledges some people won’t like the deal, but he thinks, generally, the public doesn’t care who gets the tickets.

He has eight, and is seeking four more. Lawmakers pay face value, he said. But average fans could pay far more than that $175 price: some tickets are going for more than $1,000 each online.
