Industrial rock icon Nine Inch Nails has received critical acclaim over the years for its tours’ large scale and visionary production. But after wrapping the Lights in the Sky tour in 2009, the band will begin an indefinite hiatus from the road.
“This was an amazing tour and production — certainly the best thing I’ve ever been involved with and likely the final tour for NIN on this scale,” frontman and principal member Trent Reznor said in a December 3 statement, adding that the trek also would “likely be the last [tour] for the foreseeable future.”
The band will change its lineup and scale down the production for its currently scheduled 2009 dates and any additional shows that may be announced later. The 2008 portion of the Lights in the Sky tour featured an interactive lightshow that allowed the band to trigger pre-recorded computer tracks and physically manipulate the light displays on a series of towering screens that enveloped the stage.
The statement had begun as an announcement that a 3D concert film by the crew of acclaimed director James Cameron would not be produced as planned. Negotiations over song rights with the band’s former record company broke down after a number of months, and despite finding alternate production and funding sources, the project fell through.
“The timetable is too rushed to get it filmed comfortably with the remaining time left on the tour,” Reznor explained. “This tour and a lot of the personnel involved finish at the end of this leg, so we can’t push filming into Jan / Feb.”
Despite NIN’s large fanbase and renown for first class showmanship, Reznor also hinted that there could be trouble with overall box office polls for the 2008 outing. The singer-songwriter apologized for “having a Kanye West moment” before stating that any forthcoming “bull**** end-of-the-year poll” will not accurately portray the tour’s success.
Nine Inch Nails’ next show is tonight (December 5) in Victoria, BC. The final show of the 2008 tour leg is slated for December 13 at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, NV. The band recently announced the first set of dates for its 2009 tour leg, which will kick off in New Zealand and Australia.
