New York City’s premier showcase room, The Cutting Room, located on West 24th Street, is shutting its doors after a January 13 performance by comedian Joan Rivers. The club is co-owned by Steve Walter and actor Chris Noth, best known for his roles in “Sex and the City” and in “Law & Order.”

“Our lease was up in September,” Walter told the New York Post. “We tried negotiating with the landlord but couldn’t work something out.”

Walter is scouting locations in other neighborhoods, notably TriBeCa, and hopes to open a new Cutting Room by summer. “We don’t want to lose the momentum,” he said.

There is no surprise that the intimate club is closing since the rent has reportedly tripled since they opened the club 10 years ago. “When the performance space gets crowded, it’s difficult for the wait-staff to get around to sell food and drinks,” Walter said recently about the proposed move in a CelebrityAccess/Encore profile. “Also, we have to pass on some big-name bands. We’re looking for a larger space without scaffolding outside and not next door to a hip-hop club. Maybe TriBeca?”

Neil Young, Donovan, Buddy Miles, Sting, Joan Osborne, Judy Collins, Peter Tork of The Monkees, Alanis Morrisette and Mary Wilson of The Supremes have appeared on its back room stage. When Alexa Ray Joel made her Manhattan singing debut in front of her proud parents — Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley — it was at the Cutting Room.

Rivers plays the Cutting Room when trying out new material. Besides closing night, she will also perform sets on January 6-7 (two shows on the 7th). There are also two shows on January 13, followed by a closing night party. Tickets for all Rivers’ shows are $30.

It should be noted that many New York City clubs have closed with hopes of reopening but never have, including The Bottom Line, CBGB, Tramps, Wetlands Preserve and numerous others.
