Steely Dan has added Grammy award-winning jazz guitarist Larry Carlton to select performances on its Rent Party ’09 Tour.

On tour, Steely is playing some albums in its complete format as well as an Internet Request Night in New York, NY; Los Angeles, CA; and Chicago, IL. The special nights has already played Boston, MA.

Carlton will try to recreate his magic on the group’s classic 1976 album “The Royal Scam” at New York’s Beacon Theatre on July 31 followed by the Internet Request Night on August 1. He will repeat the process at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on August 24-25; and the Chicago Theatre on September 3-4.

Carlton laid down the memorable solo on the hit single “Kid Charlemagne” on “The Royal Scam.” Steely Dan is also recreating “Aja” and “Gaucho” in the select cities on the tour but without Carlton.

The Sam Yahel Trio is the opening act.

In New York, where promoter Live Nation added four concerts to the initial four, there has been heavy television and print advertising before Carlton was added to the program.

Carlton is also playing two sets a night at the Blue Note in New York during August 6-9.
