Brian Wilson is an American singer-songwriter and original member of the 1960s surf-rock band Beach Boys. Wilson has been critically acclaimed for his songwriting abilities, particularly his use of layered vocal harmonies. While tensions within the Beach Boys caused the eventual collapse of the group’s original lineup, Wilson also faced internal struggles with substance abuse and mental illness that caused him to seek an infamously reclusive lifestyle for long periods of time. However, by the 1980s, he was able to begin pursuing a solo career, beginning with an eponymous release in 1988. Since then, he has released regular studio records and received renewed praise as a songwriting genius. Wilson tours occasionally, usually visiting medium- to large-sized theaters and concert halls.
