Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl formed the rock band The Foo Fighters in Seattle, WA after the 1994 death of Nirvana’s lead singer Kurt Cobain and subsequent breakup of that band. Grohl’s new group included Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear, and several members of another recently dissolved band, Sunny Day Real Estate. The band started out performing in Portland, OR, and soon gained widespread popularity.

The Foo Fighters have won six Grammy Awards, including three for Best Rock Album and two for Best Hard Rock Performance.

Recent performances by band members include a solo U.S. tour by drummer Taylor Hawkins in April and May of 2010. The band is expected to begin recording its seventh studio album in September 2010, for release in 2011.
