It was hot again on Broadway this past week regardless of the weather, with total grosses of $21,398,054, down a tad from the last reporting period. Once again, five productions are hovering between the million and million-and-a-half dollar mark: “Wicked” $1,402,980 filled to 100% capacity, “The Lion King” $1,167,001 at almost 98% capacity, “Jersey Boys” $1,162,541 at 100% capacity, “Mary Poppins” $1,147,284 at 96% capacity, and “The Color Purple” $1,047,073 with 91% filled to capacity.
Interestingly, five of the eleven plays on Broadway, either in previews or opened are hovering too–around the 50% capacity of their houses. Those are: “Coram Boy,” grossing $210,256 at 43% capacity; “Frost/Nixon” grossing $276,606 at 53%; “Journey’s End,” grossing $160,917 at 39%; “Radio Golf,” $62,832 at 53%; and “Talk Radio,” $226,573 at almost 45%….
The play “Coram Boy,” Helen Edmundson’s adaptation of the novel by Jamila Gavin began previews on April 16 at the Imperial Theatre and is scheduled to open on May 2 with no closing date announced.
“Radio Golf” by the late playwright August Wilson began previews on April 20 at the Cort Theatre and is scheduled to open on May 8. It is the last in his cycle of ten plays about the African American experience.
In its last week on Broadway, “The Producers” produced $519,213 at 56% capacity. It closed on April 22.
The highest ticket price this past week was $301.25 for “A Chorus Line” followed closely by a ticket for “Wicked,” $300.00. The lowest ticket price was at “Prelude to a Kiss” again for $86.25.
