Coldplay, currently on a U.S. arena tour through November 26, were the big winners at the 2008 World Music Awards (WMAs) held in Monaco last weekend. The rockers were named Best-Selling Act, Top Act in the World for 2008, and Rock Act of the Year.

Other award winners were Leona Lewis (Female Pop Artist and New Artist), Kid Rock (Male Pop Act and Pop/Rock Male Act), Amy Winehouse (Female Pop/Rock Act), Alicia Keys (R&B Act), Lil Wayne (Hip-Hop/Rap Artist), Akon (Internet Artist).

On behalf of the legendary Bealtes, Ringo Starr accepted the WMA’s Diamond Award that honored the Fab Four for selling more than 100 million albums. The award was established in 2001. Additionally, record executive, songwriter, producer and former recording artist L.A Reid received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to the music business.

The annual World Music Awards, founded in 1989, are based on worldwide sales figures provided by IFPI, a London-based body representing the recording industry.
