Broadway ticket sales had a great week across the boards with only two of the 38 current productions not posting gains. The box office total reached $22,656,837 this week compared to the total the previous reporting period of $20,911,150.
The productions that eclipse the million-dollar plateau this past week were Wicked at the Gershwin, The Lion King at the Minskoff, Promises, Promises at the Broadway, The Addams Family at the Lunt-Fontanne, Billy Elliot at the Imperial and Jersey Boys at the August Wilson. The two shows unable to post gains in sales this week were the musical Fela! at the O’Neill and the play The Merchant of Venice at the Broadhurst.
There are currently 13 plays on Broadway and “The Merchant of Venice” posted the best returns at $848,045, still less than the previous weeks’ grosses. The Broadhurst has 1,152 seats, the largest number of any theater posting a play.
Attendance was reportedly 76.5 percent this reporting period with three shows at or above 95 percent: “Wicked,” “Jersey Boys” and “The Merchant of Venice,” despite its drop in ticket sales.
Only “Wicked” achieved 100 percent of its Gross Gross Potential. The closest runner-up was “Jersey Boys” at 94 percent.
The Top Ticket continues to be from “Jersey Boys” at $350, trailed by seven other productions at $300. The Best Buy ticket as suggested by the Average Paid Admission is to the new play, Elling at the Barrymore at $34.51.
