Broadway ticket sales continue to climb, with box office reporting an increase in sales for the sixth consecutive week. Last week’s reported total of $23,884,804 was an improvement of $637,729 over the sales of the previous reporting period ending April 10 of $23,247,075. The same week last season reported $21,220,442. Comparing numbers for this season to the last, ticket sales are 2.7 percent ahead.
Five of the 38 current productions reported box office receipts in excess of $1 million including “Wicked” at the Gershwin, leading again at $1,646,991, followed by “The Lion King” at the Minskoff, $1,560,631, “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” at the Foxwoods, at $1,285,912, “Mary Poppins” at $1,009,127 and “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” at $1,009,006. “High” at the Booth reported the lowest total at the box office at $91,020 in spite of its Golden Globe winning and Tony Award nominated star, Kathleen Turner.
Of the 13 plays, “War Horse” at the Beaumont led in ticket sales at $669,438 followed by “The House of Blue Leaves” at the Kerr at $488,067.
Attendance reported for the week overall was 81.35 percent, with six shows reporting 95 percent or better. The leading three were the musical “The Book of Mormon” at 102.44 percent, with “War Horse” at 100 percent and “Anything Goes” at 100.06 percent. “Million Dollar Quartet” at the Nederlander reported the lowest percentage of capacity at 43.41 percent.
Looking at the Gross Gross Potential, “Wicked” and “The Lion King” were the top achievers at 106.18 and 106.09 percent, respectively. Reporting the lowest figure again was “High” at the Booth at 16.96 percent for the third week in a row. The show also offers the best bargain-priced average ticket at $18.41.
Only four shows posted tickets with face values at or exceeding $300, including “Jersey Boys” at $350.
This is the last week to catch “American Idiot,” which closes its doors on April 24.
