Broadway box offices saw a drop in revenues last week, with totals reaching only $20,598,779 compared to the previous week’s total of $23,738,927. That figure represents a drop in revenue when looking back at the same week in 2010 as well, when totals were a reported $22,320,533.
Currently, 32 shows are playing on Broadway stages. Five of those productions reported box office receipts in excess of $1 million. They were “Wicked” at the Gershwin, leading at $1,705,602, “The Lion King” at the Minskoff, $1,656,189, “The Book of Mormon” at the Eugene O’Neill, $1,173,580, “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” at Foxwoods, $1,150,208, and “How to Succeed in Business” at the Al Hirschfeld, $1,008,514. Again, the play “Arcadia” at the Barrymore reported the lowest return at the box office, $173,947.
There are 10 plays on Broadway with “War Horse” at the Beaumont continuing to lead ticket sales at $909,093, followed again by “The Motherf**ker With The Hat” at the Broadway at $573,666.
Attendance was down from 85 percent to 75.96 percent overall. However, seven shows reported 95 percent or more capacity with four reporting 100 percent or better: the musical “The Book of Mormon” continues to report 102.44 percent, with “Wicked,” “War Horse” and “Anything Goes” reporting full houses at 100 percent. Once again, “Million Dollar Quartet” at the Nederlander reported the lowest percentage of capacity at 36.76 percent.
Looking at Gross Gross Potential, three shows achieved 95 percent or better with “The Book of Mormon” reporting 119.06 percent, “Wicked” reporting 108.88 percent and “The Lion King” 97.98 percent. Reporting the lowest figure again was “Arcadia” at 20.47 percent.
Five shows continue to post tickets with face values at or exceeding $300, including “Jersey Boys” at $350. “Arcadia” at the Marquis offered the best bargain-priced average ticket this week at $45.03.
Opening on June 14, “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” at the Foxwoods is still in previews. Looking ahead, “Master Class,” a biographical drama by Terrence McNally about the life of the opera super-star Maria Callas, begins previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on June 14, and opens July 7.
The American Theatre Wing’s 2011 Tony Awards are scheduled for June 12 at the Beacon Theatre in New York and be broadcast on CBS. The musical “The Book of Mormon” leads all productions with 14 nominations including “Best Musical.”
