Broadway ticket sales continue to fall with totals reaching $20,965,518, compared to the $21,337,516 from the week before. However, the total revenue for the current season continues to climb compared to the same point in the previous season: $174,069,022, up 3.8 percent from last year’s gross of $167,746,875. There are currently 24 productions, three of which are plays.
Ten productions showed a modest increase in ticket sales over the previous week with “Mamma Mia!” at the Winter Garden posting the greatest improvement in sales at 6.1 percent followed by “Rock of Ages” at the Hayes, a 5.8 percent increase and “Mary Poppins” at the New Amsterdam, 5.3 percent. “Hair” at the St. James reported the largest drop in sales, down 6.8 percent.
Seven productions reported box office receipts in excess of $1 million: “Wicked” at the Gershwin at $1,882,731, “The Lion King” at the Minskoff, $1,854,764, “Spider-Man Turn off the Dark” at the Foxwoods, $1,811,432, “The Book of Mormon” at the Eugene O’Neill, $1,256,830, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” at the Al Hirschfeld, $1,223,226, “Mary Poppins” at the New Amsterdam, $1,111,911 and lastly “The Phantom of the Opera” at the Majestic, $1,026,795. The musical “Rain: A Tribute to The Beatles” at the Brooks Atkinson reported the lowest return at the box office, $280,648.
Of the three plays remaining in production, “War Horse” at the Beaumont continues to lead with ticket sales of $985,258, up from $976,735 the previous reporting period.
Attendance on Broadway crept up this past week to 85.32 percent with eight productions reporting 95 percent or better capacity. Six of those shows continued to report 100 percent or greater. Once again, the musical “The Book of Mormon” led the way, holding steady at 102.43 percent. “Hair” reported the smallest percentage at 49.19 percent, down from 51.72 percent the previous reporting period.
Looking at Gross Gross Potential, four shows achieved 95 percent or better, with three at or above 100 percent: “Wicked,” 120.19 percent, “The Lion King,” 109.73 percent and “The Book of Mormon” at 105.76 percent, each reflecting a small increase over last week’s numbers. Reporting the lowest figure again was “Hair” at the St. James at 29.45 percent, still better than last week’s at 26.17 percent and in spite of a slight drop in attendance.
“The Book of Mormon” continues to offer the Top Ticket of $477, while four other productions posted tickets with face values at or exceeding $300. They were “Jersey Boys” at $350 followed by “How to Succeed in Business” at $302, with “The Addams Family” and “Wicked” posting highs of $300. “Hair” continues to offer the best bargain-priced average ticket at $51.37, up slightly from last week.
