This dance competition features about twenty finalists each year from across the United States. Auditions are held in major U.S. cities and the contestants participate in solo, duet, and group dance numbers. The dance styles include hip-hop, street club, contemporary, jazz, ballroom, and classical. Each week, the dancers compete in front of a broadcast audience as well a panel of judges. The television audience votes to determine which contestants make the next round.

Cat Deeley, a two time Emmy nominee since becoming host in its second season, was blown away by top 10 contestant Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer’s fusion of genre defying dance moves. According to EW.com, she stated, “He does this thing, and it’s a version of hip-hop but with breaking and animatronics. To watch it, it’s so weird. It’s like you see it with your eyes, but your brain can’t compute exactly what he’s doing. It’s impressive and it kind of blows your mind. You can’t help but love him! He’s a total dude, and I mean that in the best way.”

Since its inception, So You Think You Can Dance has garnered nine Emmys. Seven of these Emmys were for Outstanding Choreography. The remaining two Emmy’s were for Outstanding Costumes.

The winners of the last eight seasons include Nick Lazzarini, Benjamin Schwimmer, Sabra Johnson, Joshua Allen, Jeanine Mason, Russell Ferguson, Lauren Froderman, and Melanie Moore.

On October 23, the 2012 SYTYCD tour kicks off in San Diego, CA. The national tour concludes in Hollywood, Florida on December 5. The six week tour will hit 25 markets. Some of the locations include Los Angeles, New York City, Boston, and Atlantic City.

Will Thomas, one of the top 10 finalists, spoke to Hitfix.com about his future plans and dreams. “My dream down the road, I want to do it all. I want to try a little bit of Broadway, I want to try a little bit of musical theater, I want to tour with an artist, I want to be in a movie, I’m an actor, so I’d love to get a role without even dancing.”

Tickets to see these talented performers live on the So You Think You Can Dance Season 9 tour went on sale Friday, August 24. The top 8 finalists perform tonight at 8 p.m. on Fox.
