Before the Backstreet Boys took the stage at their sold-out show in Thackerville, Oklahoma this past Saturday, a storm swept through the venue, leaving at least 14 people hospitalized after an entrance truss was knocked over.
Although venue staff at the Colosseum at WinStar World Casino and Resort were clearing out the amphitheatre after seeing lightning in the area, about 150 fans “did not heed staff’s warnings,” a spokesperson told CNN. Heavy rains and 80 mph winds hit the area, pushing over a metal structure that held a banner reading “The Colosseum at WinStar.” The structure fell onto the waiting fans, and 14 people were treated on the scene for injuries before being taken to the hospital.

BSB released the following statement that night:
“We never want to put our fans in harm’s way and with tonight’s weather and the injuries from earlier, we have decided to cancel the show and will attempt to reschedule. The most important thing is for everyone to get home safely and we will see you all very soon!”
Additionally, BSB member Kevin Richardson encouraged fans to keep their tickets because “Backstreet WILL BE BACK.”
The concert, which was supposed to be held on Saturday, August 18 with 98 Degrees, will be postponed and refunds will be available at point of purchase. A rescheduled date has not been announced yet.
Earlier this year, BSB announced that they would extend their residency in Las Vegas, Nevada at Zappos Theater’s Planet Hollywood. The residency kicked-off on July 25, and will continue on October 24, running through next April. Fans are expecting some sort of tour in the future, since they released the single “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” this past May. It is the first single since 2013’s In a World Like This.
