Envisioned as a multi-venue comedy showcase performed in front of live audiences and filmed for streaming at a later date, the Netflix is a Joke Fest will not be held in 2020, the streaming giant announced. Scheduled for Los Angeles in late April and May, the event was initially postponed before being called off entirely late last week.
“Netflix is a Joke Fest will no longer take place in 2020 in the best interest of health and safety of fans, comedians and crew,” reads an announcement at netflixisajoke.com. We will come back with something extra special, but until then, please stay safe.”
Announced in early March, the festival made it just 15 days before the fast-rising coronavirus case numbers forced it to be indefinitely postponed on March 17. Netflix had partnered with Live Nation in planning more than 100 live shows and events to venues across the city, which has seen more than 100,000 cases and 3,800 deaths as of Monday.
Comedians originally scheduled for the festival included David Letterman, Dave Chappelle, Ali Wong, Amy Schumer, Bill Burr, Kevin Hart, Mike Birbiglia, Norm McDonald, Pete Davidson and many more. The lineup has since been pulled down from the website, but a March post by Vulture included the following performance breakdown, which was to be capped by a hall of fame ceremony honoring comics including Richard Pryor, Joan Rivers, George Carlin, and Robin Williams:
