Broadway’s ‘Eureka Day’ Receives Second Extension
Originally slated to close on January 19 —following a limited engagement at MTC’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre— “Eureka Day” received an extension with a closing date on February 2 earlier this month. Now, Broadway’s acclaimed production will have another two-week extension and run through February 16.
Directed by Tony Award winner Anna D. Shapiro, Jonathan Spector’s comedy tells the story of a mumps outbreak which leads to a dispute between parents on the executive committee regarding the school’s liberal vaccination policy. As cases rise, the board realizes with horror that they’ve got to do what they swore they never would: make a choice that won’t please absolutely everybody.
Beginning previews on November 25, ahead of an opening night on December 16, 2024, “Eureka Day” received positive reviews. As of early December, according to the latest Broadway League data, the show filled approximately 85% of seats — a 10% increase from the preview period.
Another update regarding the play is a casting change. Tony Award-nominee Amber Gray will be replaced by Eboni Flowers as Carina starting from February 1. The remaining cast will remain intact, featuring Tony Award-winning Bill Irwin as Don, Tony Award-nominee Jessica Hecht as Suzanne, along with Emmy Award-nominee Thomas Middleditch as Eli, and Chelsea Yakura-Kurtz as Meiko, who made her Broadway debut with this play. Eboni Flowers currently portrays Winter besides serving as the understudy for Carina in the production.
The play had its world premiere at Aurora Theatre Company in Berkeley, California in 2017, and was helmed by various directors like Josh Costello, Adrienne Campbell-Holt and Katy Rudd with performances at different venues, including Off-Broadway’s Walkerspace in 2019. The current staging on the Main Stem follows an acclaimed 2022 engagement in London’s West End.
The production belongs to MTC, under the leadership of artistic director Lynne Meadow and executive director Chris Jennings, by special arrangement with Sonia Friedman Productions, Wagner Johnson Productions and Seaview.
