Despite the hardships caused by the tragedy of record-breaking Hurricane Harvey, it surely is bringing out the best in Texan hospitality.

Baylor University in Waco, Texas announced yesterday that they’d like to offer free game tickets, parking passes and meals to families who have been affected by the storm. The Baylor Bears will face the Liberty Flames in their season opener this Saturday at 6 PM at McLane Stadium. They are inviting families to fill out an online form to request up to 8 free game tickets, parking, and a complimentary meal in the Baylor Sports Network tent.

Later in the day, fellow Texas school Southern Methodist University followed suit. SMU Mustangs will take on Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at Ford Stadium in University Park, also this Saturday at 6, and are offering families displaced by Harvey free game tickets and concessions vouchers.

Earlier this week, both Baylor and SMU offered to help Houston’s Rice University football team when learning they’d be stranded until their city recovers from the storm. The Rice football team were at their season opener against Stanford in Sydney, Australia when the storm hit, and will be flying into Los Angeles before deciding when it will be safe to return to their home campus. That’s when both of the teams reached out to assure they’d be more than willing to host the players, their upcoming games, and do whatever else they can to help.

The theme of Baylor’s season opener is Fan Appreciation Day, where the team will be handing out free cooling towels and sunglasses to lucky game attendees. The SMU opener is a tribute to active military members and veterans. SMU branded “Salute to Our Heroes” thunder sticks will be given to the earliest fans to the game, who can also enjoy a pregame performance by the school’s color-guard team as well as local country artist Zach Coffey.

Both schools have expressed their deepest well wishes, and hope that attending a Saturday night football game as a family might be a brief refuge from the distress caused by the storm. Those interested in the offer can fill out a form to attend the game at Baylor University here or the game at Southern Methodist University here.
