Broadway’s Imperial Theatre could soon see a significant transformation.
The Shubert Organization presented a proposal to the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), outlining plans for the theatre’s expansion and renovation.
Designed by theatre architect Herbert J. Krapp, the Imperial Theatre interior holds landmark status—granted in 1987 after a wave of Broadway theatre demolitions—the exterior has remained unprotected.
The plans include substantial restoration of the interior, but the focal point is the annexation of an adjacent empty lot owned by the Shuberts. The new space would accommodate a new ticket lobby, commercial facilities, and upgraded restrooms, addressing long-standing issues with accessibility and capacity.

Additionally, the proposed annex would introduce ADA-compliant, gender-neutral restrooms, additional elevators, and escalators leading to the balcony. Other updates include the theatre’s exterior, featuring a vertical blade sign, a video marquee, and large glass windows offering views of 45th Street.
Pending approval, the Imperial Theatre will join a number of other Broadway venues undergoing updates. Recent examples include the revitalization of the Majestic Theatre and the transformation of the James Earl Jones Theatre, formerly the Cort Theatre.
Notably, next on the Imperial’s stage is the Broadway adaptation of the TV series “Smash,” set to begin previews on March 11 before its official opening night, April 10.
