Festival-goers who purchased presale tickets for Bonnaroo had to do so without any lineup details. But those who waited for the start of public onsales yesterday, February 9, had the benefit of knowing the billing — or at least part of it.
Dave Matthews Band, Kings of Leon, Stevie Wonder and Jay-Z were revealed as the four-day festival’s headliners early in the day by Billboard sources. However, the remaining names on the lineup were revealed much more slowly, increasing the anticipation among fans used to the full billing’s bulk announcement each season.
Throughout the day, Bonnaroo updated the lineup on its official MySpace page, one-by-one and in six-minute intervals. Each performing act was allowed to make the initial confirmation through its own chosen method of social networking before Bonnaroo added the name to its own listing.
Even with the methodical unveiling, the billing numbered nearly 100 acts by the end of the day, ranging from industry veterans (Jeff Beck and John Fogerty) to breaking newcomers (The xx and Kid Cudi). Even more performers are yet to be confirmed, including acts for the comedy portion of the festival.
As is sometimes the case, being part of the Bonnaroo lineup meant summer tour changes for some of the booked bands. The Dead Weather cancelled a previously scheduled June 11 show at City Block in Louisville, KY, to make way for its June 12 set at the famed festival. Meanwhile, DMB left a noticeable gap in its summer 2010 tour plans, leading to early speculation about a Bonnaroo gig.
Despite yesterday’s leisurely announcement, at least one Bonnaroo act has been confirmed for the past week. Wayne Coyne slipped news that his band, the Flaming Lips, would team with Stardeath and White Dwarfs for a midnight performance of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” during an interview with Spinner.
“As of yesterday, we’re gonna do it at Bonnaroo at the midnight slot, the first night,” Coyne said in the February 2 interview. “We do a Flaming Lips set then starting about 2:30 we do this ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ thing. In that sense, [Bonnaroo is] perfect for that. It lets you play a little bit longer.”
General admission tickets for Bonnaroo are currently priced at $234.50, not including $23.10 in service fees. Once the limited supply of tickets at this price point sell out, the final allotment will be available for $249.50, plus service fees.
During initial Bonnaroo presales, which ran from November 27 through December 31, tickets sold out at the $209.50 and $224.50 levels, even without a confirmed lineup.
