Iconic rock band Aerosmith will play two concerts in Hawaii on October 18 and 20 to satisfy the settlement the band reached for the cancellation of a show in the 50th state in 2007.
The band will play a show in Oahu on the 18th and a show in Maui on the 20th, and more than 3,200 fans will see one of the shows for free and be compensated for travel expenses, according to terms of the settlement. More than 8,000 fans were eligible for free tickets as part of the class action lawsuit filed on their behalf after the September 2007 cancellation. Of those 8,000-plus fans, a little over 40 percent, or the 3,200-plus, requested the tickets and travel compensation.
Aerosmith was tentatively scheduled to play the shows at the end of their 2009 summer tour, but that trek was cancelled after frontman Steven Tyler suffered a shoulder injury.
“There was some question after the tour was cancelled about when the shows would take place,” attorney Brandee Faria, who represented the fans, told TicketNews. “But, I have every reason to believe they will appear. They’ve announced the dates, and we’re quite happy. It’s a win-win for the fans.”
Faria will be on hand not only to ensure that the band will play, but that they’ll play well and with enthusiasm, which was also one of the requirements of the settlement to make sure that the band put forth maximum effort.
“I guess it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it,” she joked.
The need for the makeup concerts arose after the band cancelled a September 2007 show in Maui to reportedly play more lucrative shows in Chicago and Oahu that would overlap the Maui show. The band blamed the logistics of flying their equipment back and forth from the mainland as the reason they canceled the show. Disgruntled fans, many of whom had planned vacations around the Maui show, sued for damages, which led to the band being forced to settle.
