TicketNews’s weekly top events for 7/28/08 – 8/03/08 are in, and the rankings show that So You Think You Can Dance? has pirouetted to the top of the charts.

Taking a cue from similar reality television show American Idol (minus the singing, but with better dancing), contestants from So You Think You Can Dance will embark on a 40-city tour this fall. Based on ticket sales that began Saturday, the tour has earned the number three spot on the overall top events chart (power score 2.75) and is the bestselling concert, according to the top concert events rankings (power score on that chart is 6.86). The title of bestselling event belongs to Wicked, closely followed by the New York Yankees.

Other top concerts in the rankings include the Jonas Brothers, at number two (6.29), and The Eagles— the top-sellers in the last rankings—at number three (4.25). The North American leg of Celine Dion’s “Taking Chances” world tour begins August 12 in Boston, MA, and last-minute ticket buyers propelled her onto the concert chart this week, at number eight, with a 2.11 power score.

In the sports rankings, the Yankees lead, of course, but the Chicago Cubs edged the Boston Red Sox out of second place, to third. It seems football fans are gearing up for the new season with the Dallas Cowboys ranked at number four, the New York Giants at number six, and the Pittsburgh Steelers at number seven. Sports entertainment phenomenon WWE appears at number ten.

In the theater rankings, Jersey Boys is behind Wicked, followed by South Pacific and Lion King. The Color Purple and Monty Python’s Spamalot are still selling strong off-Broadway, they come in at numbers seven and nine, respectively. On Broadway, the top four sellers rank similarly to those off-Broadway, but shows like Young Frankenstein (number six) and Legally Blonde (number nine) are selling more tickets for shows on the Great White Way.

Bette Midler was once the hottest seller in Las Vegas, but Cher has begun to pull away with the top ranking in with a 46.06 power score, Midler trails with 26.15. Elton John: The Red Piano remains at number three, followed by Cirque du Soleil: The Beatles: Love and Cirque du Soleil: “O”. Mamma Mia! is also selling well in Vegas, good enough for number nine.

TicketNews Exclusive Rankings and Power Scores are based on ticket sales from the TicketNetwork Exchange™, the world’s largest secondary market exchange. A Power Score illustrates a given event’s category-specific significance. Two factors are used to calculate a power score: total ticket sales from the given event and total ticket sales within the category. As such, power scores should only be used to compare events within a particular category.
