This past week’s box office figures for the first week of the new season continue to look good at $19,627,188, down a bit compared to the previous week of $20,413,144. Continuing their million-dollar streak alive was Wicked at the Gershwin, West Side Story at the Palace, Billy Elliot at the Imperial, The Lion King at the Minskoff and Jersey Boys at the August Wilson. Of the 13 plays, God of Carnage at the Jacobs brought in $911,320 in ticket sales, followed by Waiting for Godot at Studio 54 and Exit the King at the Barrymore.
The largest increase dollar-wise over the previous reporting period was reported by “Wicked,” up $136,168 while the play, Blithe Spirit at the Shubert, reported the largest drop, $110,453. The Best Bargain ticket was Irena’s Vow at the Walter Kerr Theatre, $46.56 as measured by the Average Paid Admission. The Top Ticket sold continues to be a seat at “Jersey Boys,” $350.
Looking at attendance, seven productions saw more than 95 percent of seats filled. Accent on Youth at the Friedman enjoyed the largest increase over the previous week, almost 19 percent, while Chicago at the Ambassador saw a 16 percent drop. August: Osage County playing at the Music Box saw less than half, about 41 percent, of its seats filled.
If you’re not at the Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan this Sunday, June 7, be sure to catch the three-hour live broadcast of the 63rd Annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards on CBS, beginning at 8:00 p.m. Neil Patrick Harris will host the awards.
Theater lovers will have a greater opportunity to catch “God of Carnage” as the four cast members of the show, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden, previously scheduled to perform through July 19, have extended their contracts. They will take a six-week “vacation” beginning July 28 through Sept. 7, resuming their appearance Sept. 8 through Nov. 15.
