Broadway ticket sales slipped this past week, but overall it still remained strong with sales at $21,220,442 compared to $22,531,010 the previous reporting period. The box office total of $910,263,522 this season outstrips last year’s total of $899,732,467 at this same point. The number of shows remains steady at 33, with nine plays and 24 musicals. Overall attendance was 80 percent in a week with no closings.

The usual suspects led the way in ticket sales at over a million dollars: “Wicked” at the Gershwin, “The Lion King” at the Minskoff, “The Addams Family” at the Lunt-Fontanne, “Billy Elliot” at the Imperial and “Jersey Boys” at the August Wilson. Notably, the play “Fences” at the Cort in its first week of previews achieved 105 percent of its Gross Gross potential. Overall, six productions posted 95 percent attendance or better. Looking at all plays on Broadway, “Red” at the Golden and “Fences” reported the largest audience share at 98.26 and 97.9 percent respectively.

Faring best when looking at the bottom line from one week to the next was “Jersey Boys” with an increase of $170,659. Faring worst was “Mary Poppins” at the New Amsterdam, dropping $389,828. Comparing pluses and minuses in attendance percentages, “God of Carnage” at the Jacobs gained 7.5 percent while “A Little Night Music” at the Kerr lost almost 28 percent.

“La Cage aux Folles” celebrated its Opening Night at the Longacre this week on April 18. A slew of new shows currently in previews are slated to open soon:

“American Idiot”, a musical, opens April 20 at the St. James
“Sondheim on Sondheim”, a musical, opens April 22 at Studio 54
“Promises, Promises”, a musical, opens April 25 at the Broadway
• “Fences”, a play, opens April 26 at the Cort
“Enron”, a play, opens April 27 at the Broadhurst
“Collected Stories”, a play, opens April 28 at the Friedman

The Top Ticket price of $350 continues to be offered by “A Little Night Music” and “Jersey Boys” while The Best Buy as gauged by the Average Paid Admission was offered by “Collected Stories.”
