Box office returns bumped up this past week with ticket sales reporting $17,734,574, up from the $16,930,140 in sales in the previous reporting period ending February 20. The same week last season reported a total of $14,246,755. Comparing numbers for this season to last, ticket sales are 2.7 percent ahead.
Six of the 25 current productions reported box office receipts in excess of $1 million including “Wicked” at the Gershwin, $1,660,095, “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” at the Foxwoods, $1,559,341, “The Lion King” at the Minskoff, $1,541,682, “American Idiot” at the St. James, $1,301,949, “Jersey Boys” at the August Wilson, $1,062,895 and “The Addams Family” at the Lunt-Fontanne, $1,059,807.
Attendance reported for the week overall was 89.8 percent, with the new production of “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” at the Al Hirschfeld leading at 100.14 percent, followed by “Spider-Man” at 100.08 percent and “Wicked” at 100 percent. “Colin Quinn: Long Story Short” once again reported the lowest percentage of capacity at 61.56 percent
“Wicked” ranked highest in achieving its Gross Gross Potential at nearly 106 percent. Reporting the lowest figure was “Million Dollar Quartet” at the Nederlander at 40 percent.
Repeating the previous reporting period’s success, five shows this week posted tickets with face values at or exceeding $300, including “Jersey Boys” at $350 while the best bargain-priced average ticket was $57.34 for “Good People” at the Friedman.
“Good People” will open March 3 at the Friedman. The play, “That Championship Season” is in its third week of previews at the Jacobs and will open March 6. The opening night for “Spider-Man” remains March 15 at the Foxwoods. “Rock Of Ages” is on hiatus and resumes performances March 24 at the Helen Hayes.
A new production, the play “Arcadia” is in previews at the Barrymore with Opening Night scheduled for March 17. Another play, “Ghetto Klown” is in previews at the Lyceum and opens March 22. A musical, “The Book of Mormon” is in previews at the Eugene O’Neill and will open March 24. The venerable “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” is in previews at the Al Hirschfeld and will open March 27.
