Although the weekly ticket sales on Broadway dropped this past week, sales the overall season hit an important milestone, surpassing the $1 billion mark for the year.

The season’s total of $1,008,883,463 is well ahead of last year’s pace, as at the same point in 2010 sales totaled only $974,854,259. For the week, ticket sales reportedly grossed $22,125,979, down $1,374,514 from the previous week, missing the anticipated bump from the announcement of the 2011 Tony Awards.

There are 35 productions on Broadway with four reporting box office receipts in excess of $1 million. Those productions were “The Lion King” at the Minskoff, $1,601,654, “Wicked” at the Gershwin at $1,599,916, “The Book of Mormon” at the Eugene O’Neill, $1,129,867 and “Jersey Boys” at the August Wilson, $1,006,650. “Lombardi” at the Circle in Square reported the lowest return at the box office at $148,752.

Comparing the numbers for the 13 plays on Broadway, “War Horse” at the Beaumont led ticket sales for the fourth week in a row at $884,015. “The Motherf**ker With The Hat” at the Broadway finished second at $631,787.

For the week, attendance fell slightly from 80.37 percent to 78.83. The number of shows reporting capacity of 95 percent or better dropped as well to eight productions from the 11 productions last week. The musical “The Book of Mormon” again led the way in attendance percentage at 102.44 percent, followed by a near tie between “The Lion King” at 100.04 and “War Horse” at 100.01 percent. “Born Yesterday” at the Cort reported the lowest percentage of capacity at 44.87 percent.

Again this week, three shows achieved 95 percent or better of their Gross Gross Potential: “The Book of Mormon” at 114.63 percent, “The Lion King” at 104.91 and “War Horse” at 100.01. Holding the spot for the lowest figure was “Lombardi” at the Circle in the Square, 20.47 percent.

Five shows posted tickets with face values at or exceeding $300, including “Jersey Boys” at $350. “The People in the Picture” was the best bargain-priced average ticket at $44.95.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” has been on hiatus since April 17, but will resume performances at the Foxwoods on May 12 with its opening scheduled for June 14.
