According to the figures posted by The Broadway League there was an increase in sales among 18 productions for the week ending July 29, with sales up $225,177. The total gross ticket sales have continued to climb, up 2.02 percent from last week, with theatres continuing to sell out their shows of several productions. The Broadway League posted receipts totaling $23,423,051 through Sunday.
“Wicked” and “The Lion King” remain neck and neck as the two top grossing productions for the week ending July 29. “Wicked” barely beat out “The Lion King” this week for the top spot, staying over $2 million in total ticket sales; however both shows did decrease in sales. “Wicked” is down $90, 484 and “The Lion King” is down $179,836, yet both of the shows remained over the $2 million mark. However, with those losses “Wicked” and “The Lion King” also had the greatest decreases in sales this week, according to BroadwayWorld.com.
“Evita” rounded out the top five grossing productions this week at $1,153, 587, with audience capacity at 87 percent. Sales increased by $214,257, making “Evita” number one for the biggest increase in gross sales compared to last week.
“Bring It On The Musical” had the second largest increase in sales this week, up $92,724, with an audience at 95 percent capacity, according to Playbill.com. The production is also one of the lowest grossing shows this week at $467,219 over a total of eight shows; however this production is still on preview performances. It does not officially open until August 1, at the St. James Theatre for a limited run.
The new adaptation of “Fela” is still struggling a bit. The show will only run on Broadway until August 4. “Fela” filled the Al Hirschfield Theatre’s seats at 59.3 percent, up 6.3 percent from the previous week resulting in an increase of sales by $43,586. While “Fela” is the second lowest grossing production this week with receipts totaling $348, 776, “End of the Rainbow” came in last at $219,181.
“Gore Vidal’s The Best Man” came in at number three for the biggest decrease in sales, with a loss of $80, 982. Ticket sales totaled $540, 523, which is one of the lowest gross totals of the production’s run so far. The show was scheduled to close on July 8, but it has been extended twice, and will run until September 9, 2012. “Gore Vida’s The Best Man” filled the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre at a capacity of 69.2 percent, down 5.8 percent from last week.
“Harvey,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Newsies,” and “The Lion King” have all sold out shows this week. These shows continue to draw the most crowds. “Harvey” played for a full house at 103.7 percent capacity, up .7 percent. “The Book of Mormon” stayed the same this week with a packed house at 102.6 percent capacity. “Newsies” increased at 101.8 percent, up .2 percent from last week. “The Lion King” continues to fill the seats at a capacity of 100 percent.
Several shows remained above the $1 million mark including: “Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Newsies,” “Once,” and “Mary Poppins.”
