The rockstars of ZZ Top were slated to kick-off their 50th Anniversary Tour later this month, but had to cancel the first four shows due to illness.
The tour was slated to begin in Ridgefield, Washington on August 16 at the Sunlight Supply Amphitheatre, followed by gigs at Airway Heights’ Northern Quest Casino Theater, Vancouver’s PNE Amphitheater, and the Yakima Valley SunDome in Washington state. However, ZZ Top released a statement noting that the band’s drummer, Frank Beard, has been diagnosed with pneumonia and was told by doctors to rest.
“He apparently came down with the ailment while on the band’s just completed tour of Europe, and upon his return home, was advised by his physician to rest and recuperate,” the band said in a statement on their website, noting that those who have purchased tickets will be offered refunds via point of purchase.
The 50th Anniversary outing was announced earlier this year, revealing dates across the U.S. and Europe. They are scheduled to perform through late October.
“It’s been five decades, and I think we’re starting to get pretty good at all this!” Gibbons said alongside the tour announcement. “We’re truly excited to be appearing across the continent this summer and fall, playing our bluesy kind of rock like we started in ’69. The beards, Frank’s excepted, are perhaps a bit longer, yet nothing else has changed. We’re keeping it that way.”
