Broadway’s ‘Wicked’ Becomes First Show to Gross Over $5 Million in a Single Week

“Wicked” has become the first show ever to gross over $5 million in a single week.

The achievement comes during what was the highest-grossing Christmas week for Broadway since 2018. The 33 shows currently running brought in $55.8 million, welcoming 306,180 theatregoers at an average ticket price of $182.32.

“Wicked” surpassed The Lion King’s previous single-week gross record of $4.3 million by $700,000. A total of 17,334 audience members filled the Gershwin Theatre during the week, paying an average ticket price of $290.61.

“The Lion King” grossed $4.2 million for the week. Other top earners included “Hamilton” at $2.93 million, “Aladdin” at $2.81 million, and “The Great Gatsby” at $2.62 million.

“Maybe Happy Ending,” a newer addition to Broadway’s roster, joined the $1 Million Club for the first time, earning $1.02 million at an average ticket price of $130.

Across the board, Broadway productions saw increases in weekly grosses, with all but four shows experiencing six-figure growth compared to the previous week. Among the few exceptions was “Gypsy,” which faced challenges due to cast illnesses resulting in seven canceled performances.

Notably, productions like “Romeo and Juliet,” “The Outsiders,” and “Suffs” exceeded 100% of their seating capacity. This year’s Christmas week grosses represent a 23% increase over the same period last year and a 16% improvement compared to the season-to-date figures from 2022.
