Dance Moms Parody Musical ‘The Pyramid’ to Open In New York

A parody musical inspired by the reality show Dance Moms is set to make its official debut with a concert performance on February 28 at The Green Room 42 in New York City.

Titled “The Pyramid,” the production features music and lyrics by James Stryska and Isabel Grace, with a book by Erica Molfetto and Molly Russo. Fans unable to attend in person will also have the option to stream the concert live.

“The Pyramid” draws its inspiration from the popular reality series, which followed a group of young competitive dancers, their opinionated mothers, and their strict instructor, Abby Lee Miller.

The show, which aired from 2011 to 2019, became a cultural touchstone due to its blend of talent and on-screen confrontations. However, the show has also been clouded by controversies, including critiques of its treatment of women and allegations of racism during its production.

The creators of “The Pyramid” aim to balance humor with thoughtful commentary, offering a satirical, yet reflective take on the series. Co-songwriter Isabel Grace emphasized this approach during a 2023 interview with Playbill

“Because we’re doing a parody musical, we have lots of free range,” Grace explained. “We are referencing these characters, but we also get to have commentary on top of that. How was what happened not okay, and how can we use comedy and our voice to highlight that?”

The project has been in development since 2023 and gained significant momentum after several demo tracks went viral on TikTok.
