The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, or just simply Coachella, began in 1999 with about 25,000 fans in attendance. Despite a respectable first year, the festival was not held in 2000 due to financial concerns, but in 2001, Coachella came back and has been one of the most successful music festivals ever since. The festival takes place at the Empire Polo Fields in the Coachella Valley in Indio, California.
Coachella features multiple different musical genres including rock, alternative and hip-hop. The music festival has also become known among fans for reuniting iconic bands. In 2001, Jane’s Addiction reunited, in 2003 it was Iggy Pop & the Stooges and in 2007, Rage Against the Machine came together.
In addition to the music, Coachella also features art and sculptures for fans to enjoy as well. Beginning in 2002, camping was given as an option for fans who are attending the festival, in 1999 and 2001 camping was not allowed due to security concerns.
