The
Golden State Warriors may be dispatching its opponents on the basketball courts with relative ease, but it may find its opponents in the court of law to be a little more tenacious. While fighting the StubHub lawsuit, the Warriors have taken on a new battle in its proposal to build a new arena in San Francisco’s Mission Bay. A group opposed to the project led by political consultant Jack Davis has vowed to litigate “until the cows come home.” Mr. Davis ran three successful mayoral campaigns, and has been described by SFGATE as “one of the most feared and loathed political players in San Francisco.”On the heels receiving approvals by the
San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the Mission Bay Alliance (MBA) filed suit seeking to block an agreement between UCSF chancellor Sam Hawgood and the city. Most observers believe that this is the first of what will be many legal entanglements between the proponents and opponents of this project.Support for the stadium project may already be eroding. In July, a Warriors-commissioned poll showed about 61 percent support for the stadium. A
MBA backed poll released Monday found that the support had declined by 12 percent to 49 percent.
At the end of the day, with all the lawsuits and lawyers to litigate them, the fans and taxpayers of San Francisco will probably be left paying the tab and holding the bag.
