Tom Waits is an American singer-songwriter and musician whose work is often a cross of jazz, blues, folk and experimental rock. He debuted in 1973 with "Closing Time," and has since released a total of 20 studio albums. In the '70s and '80s, he toured regularly to match his prolific record output, though by the '90s he was focusing on his theatrical and film work.
Waits launched his most recent North American and European tour, the Glitter and Doom Tour, in 2008 with dates running from June through early August. Ticketmaster used Wait's North American tour dates to premier its new paperless ticketing system, which admits patrons through a credit card scan and ID check at the venue's door rather than with a ticket. Waits held back premium tickets for a few cities on the tour for an auction, which the musician called "scalping for charity."
Tom Waits tickets auctioned for charity
Tom Waits is auctioning off five pairs of premium tickets to shows in four cities along his current Glitter and Doom tour to benefit five charities. Shows included are ones in Phoenix, AZ (June 17-18), Houston, TX (June 22), Columbus, OH (June 28), and Atlanta, GA (July 5). The auctions begin on June 11 at 10 am PDT at TicketMaster.com and will end on June 13 at noon PDT for the Phoenix dates while the other three auctions will end on June 19 at noon PDT.
“Some folks prefer to pay more, you get a good seat, a good tax write off and a good feeling for helping for your needy neighbors,” said Waits in a statement. “It's scalping for charity.”
Tom Waits's "Glitter and Doom"
Eccentric singer, songwriter, actor Tom Waits used his website on May 5 to announce his Glitter and Doom summer tour, which will primarily hit southern markets. The limited 13-date, 12-city theater tour kicks off June 17 in Phoenix, AZ and wraps July 5 in Atlanta, GA.
The announcement was made during a quirky streaming video via YouTube that was supposed to be highlights from a press conference, but actually revealed Waits to be talking to room of empty chairs, fielding pre-recorded questions broadcast by a record player.
