Is the rent increasing on Broadway? Yes, according to the production of Rent; there was a hefty and enviable 33% increase in ticket sales this past week. That put the gross at $632,966 with 100% attendance compared to $379,071 and 67.5% attendance in the previous reporting period.
Broadway’s ticket sales logged in at $18,416,615 this past week, down slightly over the previous week’s report of $19,838,011, a decrease of $1,421,396.
Productions in order of highest ticket sales were: Wicked $1,480,919 at 100% capacity; The Lion King $1,324,689 at 100%; Mary Poppins $1,222,675 at 100%; Jersey Boys $1,211,816 at 100%; and The Color Purple $1,044,382 at almost 96% capacity. Legally Blonde continues to fare well, holding onto its No. six place on this list of highest grossing productions on Broadway with $1,003,305 at 87% capacity.
Of the four plays currently on Broadway, Frost/Nixon is making a comfortable showing filling 87% of seats with $521,048 in ticket sales. By comparison, Deuce is not living up to its potential, filling only 43.5% of seats at the Music Box Theatre for a total of $180,315 though somewhat improved over last week’s performance.
If you haven’t caught it yet, Xanadu deserves attention for more than its movie history and music; you may be delighted at the comedic performances of Jackie Hoffman and Mary testa in comic roles created and written by Douglas Carter Beane. They play jealous muses against the Greek muse, Kira, played by Kerry Butler. The original Sonny in the Broadway version, James Carpinello, was injured June 12 and has been replaced by Cheyenne Jackson thought that information does not appear on the official website.
