Jennifer Garner to kick it on Broadway with Kevin KlineBroadway Ticket Sales Report
Week ending September 23, 2007

Leading man Kevin Kline seems to have a nose for Broadway as he has “Garner-ed” the right leading lady, actress Jennifer Garner, as Roxanne in Cyrano de Bergerac. This new production of Edmond Rostand’s 19th century classic was adapted by the late Anthony Burgess and will be directed by David Leveaux. Previews are scheduled to begin Oct. 12 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre and open Nov. 1 as a limited engagement continuing through Dec. 23.

Two plays, Mauritius and The Ritz, opened to previews recently. Now a third play, Pygmalion, previewed Sept. 14 at the American Airlines Theatre and will open Oct. 18.

The line-up of leaders in box office receipts this past week:
o Wicked $1,405,642 at 99% capacity
o Jersey Boys $1,234,306 at 100%
o The Lion King $1,048,250 at 91%
o Mamma Mia! $886,228 at 94%
o The Color Purple $809,866 at 81% capacity.
Most other productions’ figures held steady or enjoyed a slight improvement. One factor keeping the overall box office receipts up is that no theatre reports less than 56% (The Drowsy Chaperone) seats filled. Jersey Boys is still reporting the highest average ticket paid, but expect that to change with Young Frankenstein making its debut.

Kudos to The Color Purple’s Fantasia Barrino, also of television’s American Idol fame for her extended casting in the production, through January 6, 2008. Though this bright new star was originally reported as illiterate, Ms. Barrino corrected that impression, telling the New York Post that she dropped out of school in ninth grade and only had trouble reading, but was not unable to read.
