Ticket scalpers, often shady characters who prowl outside arenas and stadiums, are being replaced by officially sanctioned Web-based resellers.

Industry titan Ticketmaster — as well as smaller companies like StubHub and Viagogo — are partnering with concert venues and sports teams to resell tickets that would otherwise go unused, The Washington Post reported Saturday.

Competition among ticket resellers may benefit consumers — with lower prices and more fraud protection — as well as individuals with tickets they cannot use, experts say.
