The eclectic and political DJ duo Thievery Corporation has announced the first round of dates for its 2009 North American trek. The Radio Retaliation tour opens with 14 dates along the East Coast, including two dates in Canada, with more shows expected in the future.

The outing launches in the duo’s hometown of Washington, DC, with five shows at the 9:30 Club from January 27-31. The run was originally scheduled for just three nights, but after those shows sold-out and demand remained high, two additional gigs were added to the residency.

The tour will continue with a February 20 set at Riviera Theatre in Chicago, IL, with dates following through a March 7 appearance at the Langerado Music Festival at Bicentennial Park in Miami, FL. Other highlights include a February 24 show at the new House of Blues venue in Boston, MA, and a February 25-26 run at Terminal 5 in New York, NY.

Thievery Corporation members Rob Garza and Eric Hilton are supporting their fifth studio album “Radio Retaliation,” which hit stores in September 2008. All nights of the tour will feature live performances by a 15-member band, according to the group’s Web site.

“Radio Retaliation” is a follow-up to 2006’s mix compilation “Versions,” and adds to the group’s arsenal of politically charged songs. “There’s no excuse for not speaking out at this point, with the suspension of habeas corpus, outsourced torture, illegal wars of aggression, fuel, food, and economic crises,” Garza explained in a statement. “It’s hard to close your eyes and sleep while the world is burning around you. If you are an artist, this is the most essential time to speak up.”
