This past week’s outstanding numbers are almost a cookie-cutter of the previous week with $21,303,554 in box office sales, compared to the week ending April 12 of $21,432,402. Overall, the season continues to show much strength considering the economy, racking up $823,985,534 compared to last season at the same time of $797,952,159. A total of 35 productions made for a busy Broadway and once again, the numbers were led by these six million-dollar musical productions: Wicked at the Gershwin, The Lion King at the Minskoff, West Side Story at the Palace, Billy Elliot at the Imperial, Jersey Boys at the August Wilson and Mamma Mia! at the Winter Garden in that order. Not to be outdone were the 16 plays, with God of Carnage at the Jacobs leading the way in ticket sales among plays and was followed by Blithe Spirit at the Shubert and Waiting for Godot at Studio 54.

Dollar-wise, the largest increase was reported by the play Irena’s Vow at the Walter Kerr of $51,121 which also saw the largest increase in attendance at more than 16 percent. The largest drop in revenues was reported by Chicago at the Ambassador of $143,364. Shrek at the Broadway saw the biggest drop in attendance, just over 11 percent.

Joe Turner’s Come and Gone at the Belasco, opening on the 15th to great reviews, posted the Best Bargain ticket price at $38.72 Average Paid Admission. The Top Ticket price of $350 is seen at the productions 33 Variations at the Eugene O’Neill and “Jersey Boys.”

Also opening this week were the musical Next to Normal at the Booth Theatre and the play Mary Stuart at the Broadhurst. There will be a lot of razzle-dazzle this coming week with six more Opening Nights.

TFL and ATBS for ticketing professionals

Award season is looking up with nominees for the 2008-2009 75th Drama League Awards were announced in April. The awards will be made May 15 at a Ceremony and Luncheon at the Marriott Marquis Hotel. In other award news, nominees for the Outer Critics Circle Awards for 2008-2009 have also been announced; winners will be announced the morning of May 11, followed May 21 by an awards dinner in the Eugenia Room at Sardi’s.
