Even as the 64th Annual Tony Awards draw closer, Broadway experienced a seasonal slump at the box office. Totals dropped about $1.5 million, going from $22,320,533 for the previous reporting period to $20,741,221 this past week. There was an admirable 9.4 percent increase when comparing ticket sales between last season at this time of $39,349,380 to $43,061,754 for the same point in the current season.
Leading the pack this past week was Wicked at the Gershwin, The Lion King at the Minskoff, The Addams Family at the Lunt-Fontanne, Promises, Promises at the Broadway, Billy Elliot at the Imperial and Fences at the Cort. Jersey Boys at the August Wilson brought in less than $1 million at the box office for the first time since early April.
“Fences” was the only play to surpass $1 million at the box office, reached 101.7 percent of its capacity while Hair at the Hirschfeld reached less than half at 46.5 percent. “Wicked” continues to thrive, posting the next highest attendance record at 100 percent capacity.
Overall, Broadway saw almost 75 percent attendance this past week for the 25 musicals and eight plays. Seeing the only significant uptick in sales was “A Behanding in Spokane” and “God of Carnage,” which can be attributed to last minute theatergoers catching those shows before they closed the doors on June 6. American Idiot at the St. James took a big hit this week, plummeting from $840,088 the previous week to $612,380 this past week, a drop of 21.9 percent.

• “A Little Night Music: with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury will present its final performance on June 20, 2010. On July 13, 2010, Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch will step into the roles of “Desiree Armfeldt” and “Madame Armfeldt” in this Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler musical.
• For Noel Coward fans, a revival of “Brief Encounter” will be launched at Studio 54 by the Roundabout Theatre Company in association with David Pugh & Dafydd Rogers according to the New York Theatre Guide. Previews begin September 10 and the production will play a limited engagement through to December 5, 2010.
