After several months bouncing between temporary homes after the Bleecker Street Theatre unexpectedly closed, “The Quantum Eye” has found its place at Theatre 80 St. Marks, dazzling audiences with feats of mental acuity.

“The Quantum Eye” is a one-man show featuring Sam Eaton, a mentalist who has been exploring the human mind for years. Before the show, the audience receives a program with the usual list of acts, as well as explanations of some of the tactics Eaton is about to use on audience members. Those who arrive in time to read the program thoroughly will learn a bit about lie detection, mnemonics, suggestion and other tricks that hint at what is to come.

Such an introduction should diminish the awe inspired by Eaton’s act due to its explicit explanations, but it is difficult not to be blown away by the feats that follow. More than once at the end of a segment I found myself sitting with my mouth hanging open and simply saying, “What?!”

Part of the fun is not knowing what you’re getting into, so most details of the show will not be revealed here. Suffice it to say that Eaton reads people incredibly well, figuring out exactly what they are thinking no matter how impossible it may seem. For example, early on he manages to deduce the name of a volunteer’s childhood pet without any clues besides her body language.

As the show continues, audience members become more and more impressed, and the grand finale makes it difficult for even the most skeptical to doubt his abilities.

Eaton keeps the audience thoroughly entertained by blending humor with his brand of mentalism (whatever you do, don’t call it magic; this is quite a different animal). “The Quantum Eye” is appropriate for all ages, although very young children might get antsy.
