“Spy: The Exhibit” purports to take visitors beyond what they know about spies from movies or novels and show them what spying is really about. The exhibit features real spy gadgets that have been used over the last century, some of which are being seen for the first time by the public, as well as videos and interactive features that allow visitors to try their skills at being spies themselves. Included in the self-guided tour are devices used for encryption and decryption, surveillance methods (like cameras hidden in everyday objects), models of spycraft, and artifacts from captured spies.
The exhibit is incredibly fascinating. It would be easy to spend an entire afternoon exploring the two floors of spy gadgets, historical factoids and interactive features. Patrons can try their luck at navigating a laser maze or watch first-hand accounts of CIA employees’ experiences. It is especially interesting to see how potential problems were identified and solved, before most people would know there was a problem to begin with. For instance, there is a map made of silk, so that spies would not make any rustling noises when they opened it. The sheer brilliance of some of the gadgets and tactics is astonishing.
“Spy: The Exhibit” is perfect for anyone with an interest in spies, including families. Kids will love the interactivity and fancier gadgets, while older patrons can delve into the history of spies and connect what they know about wars and other past events with the espionage that was occurring at the time.
