UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones will no longer go-on with the highly-anticipated match versus Stipe Miocic at Madison Square Garden next month due to an injury.

According to UFC President Dana White, Jones tore a pectoral tendon off the bone during a training session on Monday. Due to the nature of the injury, Jones will need surgery and will be recovering for at least eight months. This means the main event of UFC 295 on November 11 is called-off.

Now, Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall will battle it out for the interim heavyweight title, while the light heavyweight title between Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira will be moved to the main event, White said.

Jones was set to take on Miocic, who he called the greatest heavyweight ever, after returning to the UFC in March following a three-year sabbatical. He holds various records including the most title defenses, most wins, and longest win streak. He held the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion title from March 2011 to April 2015 and December 2018 to August 2020, as well as earning the title as youngest champion in UFC history after defeating Mauricio Rua at 23-years-old.
