The New Year on Broadway got off to a strong start with record ticket sales for the 36 productions: $34,997,571 for the week ending January 2. The same week last season reported $28,089,912. Comparing ticket sales of the previous reporting period ending December 26 of $24,993,789, that is more than a $10 million jump in one week.
A total of 17 shows reported box office receipts in excess of $1 million, including (in order) “Wicked” at the Gershwin, $2,228,235; “The Lion King” at the Minskoff, $1,992,270; “Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark” at the Foxwoods Theater, $1,880,833; “Billy Elliott: The Musical” at the Imperial, $1,518,486; and “Mary Poppins” at the New Amsterdam, $1,492,701.
Other productions with notable gate receipts included “The Addams Family” at the Lunt-Fontanne; $1,408,509; and the special, “Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles” at the Neil Simon, $1,404,356.
Among the eight shows achieving highest marks for reaching or exceeding 100 percent of their Gross Gross Potential were “Wicked” at 142 percent; “The Lion King’ at 130.5 percent; “Jersey Boys” at 117.03 percent; “The Merchant of Venice” at 110.27 percent; and “Mary Poppins” at 105.85 percent.
Nine shows posted tickets with face values in excess of $300, including one at $350 and one at $352 while the best bargain-priced average ticket was $53.02 for “A Free Man of Color.”
Two openings coming up are “Spider-Man” on February 7 and “The Importance of Being Earnest” at the American Airlines Theatre on February 13.
Closing their runs on January 2 were: the musicals “West Side Story” at the Palace, which generated more than $1.4 million in its final week; “Elf” at the Hirschfeld and “Promises, Promises” at the Broadway, both of which generated more than $1.3 million for the week; “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” at the Jacobs; “Fela!” at the O’Neill; and “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” at the Belasco. Also closing were the plays “Brief Encounter” at Studio 54; “The Pee-wee Herman Show” at the Sondheim and the special, “Donny and Marie” at the Marquis.
