Multi-talented Texas musician, songwriter, producer and actor Stephen Bruton died on May 9 from complications of throat cancer, which was diagnosed in 2007. He was 60.
At the time of his death, Bruton was in Los Angeles finishing up work as music producer and composer for the film “Crazy Heart” starring Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell and Robert Duval. He was undergoing medical treatment at the same time.
Bruton played lead guitar for Kris Kristofferson for 17 years, as well as for Bonnie Raitt, Christine McVie and others. His record production credits include Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Alejandro Escovedo, Marcia Ball and Storyville.
Bruton launched his own solo career in 1993 and recorded five albums, of which the last three were released by New West Records. His own songs have been recorded by Kristofferson, Raitt, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Little Feat, Jimmy Buffett, Patty Loveless and Martina McBride, among many others.
As an actor, Bruton’s screen credits include “Heaven’s Gate,” “Miss Congeniality,” “The Alamo,” and “Man Of The House.”
Bruton is survived by his wife Mary Keating-Bruton. Funeral arrangements in his Fort Worth, TX, hometown have not been finalized.
