American fans eager to catch the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ first U.S. tour in over four years will have to wait a little longer.

The trailblazing funk-rock band has postponed the U.S. itinerary of its I’m With You Tour due to an injury. Originally set to launch January 20 in Sunrise, FL, the rescheduled tour leg now will kick off March 29 in Tampa Bay, FL.

In addition to mixing up the sequence of its U.S. tour dates, the band also has been forced to split the itinerary into two separate legs to schedule around a preexisting European tour. National concerts originally booked through February 3 will take place in early spring; shows once scheduled from February 4 on will instead be staged in late summer or early fall.

News of the postponement arrived today, January 11, via a statement on RHCP’s official Web site. According to that statement, frontman Anthony Kiedis “recently underwent surgery to remove a crushed sesamoid bone and correct a detached flexor tendon in his foot and is expected to make a full recovery.”

Tickets purchased for the original tour dates will be honored at the rescheduled events, according to the band’s statement.

The Chili Peppers revealed tour dates in weekly batches throughout December, with public onsales closely following each round of announcements. The band’s Web site currently lists 16 of the tour’s 23 dates as being sold out.

RHCP is touring behind the August 2011 release of its tenth studio album, “I’m With You.” The 2012 trek marks the Chili Peppers’ first full-length U.S. outing since the 2006-2007 Stadium Arcadium Tour.
