For the fourth straight week AC/DC outsold the rest, according to TicketNews’s Weekly Top Events rankings for the week ending October 12. The band is ranked number one overall with a 6.5 power score, ahead of Wicked and its 5.61 power score. Madonna, who began the North American leg of her “Sticky and Sweet” world tour on October 4 in New Jersey, leaps to number three with a 3.42 power score. Baseball fans propelled the Tampa Bay Rays to number four in the overall rankings (power score 3.29), ahead of football teams the Dallas Cowboys (number six, 2.33) and the Texas Longhorns (number eight, 2.08).
The Tampa Bay Rays knock the Dallas Cowboys from the number one spot in the Top Sports Events rankings, a position they held for two weeks. Baseball playoffs tickets are selling strong with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox rank at numbers four and five, respectively. The Washington Redskins (number seven, 2.87) and the Arizona Cardinals (number nine, 2.43) appear in the rankings for the first time.
AC/DC holds a huge lead in the Top Concert Events rankings. They have a 20.25 power score as compared to number two Madonna’s 8.23 score. The Eagles are still a popular ticket among concertgoers, as they rank at number three with a power score of 6.80. Wicked is still the top seller both on and off Broadway and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular at number two in both the Broadway and theater rankings. The third, fourth, and fifth bestselling shows are the same in both rankings; Jersey Boys, South Pacific, and the Lion King fill those positions. Billy Elliot is more popular on Broadway but Cirque du Soleil: Wintuk is more popular off Broadway. La Traviata and The Seagull enter the Broadway rankings for the first time, at numbers nine and ten.
Now that Cher’s Las Vegas show has ended, Bette Midler is the number one diva in town with a 50.96 power score. There is, of course, number two Elton John and his 15.58 power score to contend with. Cirque du Soleil: “O” is the third bestselling Vegas show, ahead of Donny & Marie Osmond. Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular, Mamma Mia!, and Stomp Out Loud round out the Las Vegas rankings.
TicketNews Exclusive Rankings and Power Scores are based on ticket sales from the TicketNetwork Exchange™, the world’s largest secondary market exchange. A Power Score illustrates a given event’s category-specific significance. Two factors are used to calculate a power score: total ticket sales from the given event and total ticket sales within the category. As such, power scores should only be used to compare events within a particular category.
