Mark Wahlberg’s action film “Max Payne” took in the highest box office totals this past weekend ousting last week’s number one, “Beverly Hills Chihuahua”, from the top spot. Ticket buyers came out to a tune of $18 million to for the film, which is based on a video game, that stars Wahlberg as a New York City cop hunting the killers of his wife and child.
“W”, Oliver Stone’s biopic of President George W. Bush, premiered this weekend at number four with a take of $10.6 million. The film stars Josh Brolin and was turned around by Stone after only five months, two weeks before the presidential elections. Critics have said the film shows empathy for the outgoing president, considered somewhat surprising from the liberal leaning Stone.
“The Secret Life of Bees” debuted in third place with a healthy $11.1 million take. The adaptation of the Sue Monk Kidd best seller stars Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo. The drama depicts a troubled teen learning life lessons through the beekeeping operations of three Southern sisters.
The dog flick “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” slipped to second place after enjoying two weeks as the top grossing film. The movie made $11.2 million this bringing its total so far to $69.1 million.
The only other new film to make the top ten was the road comedy “Sex Drive”, which landed ninth with $3.57 million.
the Shia LaBeouf thriller, “Eagle Eye”, is in its fourth weekend and so far has raked in $81.3 million. This weekend it comes in at number five with $7.34 million.
